Bloodhound
Breed Profile |
Originally known as the Chien
de St. Hubert, the Bloodhound originated in the Ardenne region of
Central Europe, and has been used as a scent hound since the early
1800's. The Bloodhound is a very powerful scenting dog, with loose skin
that hangs in deep folds, especially around the head and neck. Their
natural tracking ability has made the breed invaluable to hunters, law
enforcement and search and rescue for many years. Bloodhounds are large
dogs that stand from 23 to 27 inches, and weigh from 90 to 110 pounds.
Extremely affectionate, devoted and somewhat shy, Bloodhounds get along
very well with other dogs and love people - especially children. They
are sensitive and somewhat shy, a trait that is very endearing and also
makes them very intelligent and easy to train. These noble and dignified
dogs have an appearance of wisdom and solemnity, and their extremely
gentle and good-natured dispositions have made them quite popular
throughout North America and abroad. Coat colors can be black and tan,
liver and tan or red, with the darker colors being sometimes
interspersed with lighter hair. Due to their hound instincts,
Bloodhounds should never be allowed to have free range without
supervision, as their noses can lead them into hot water. Exercise and
grooming needs are moderate - a good daily walk and a weekly brushing
will keep them healthy and happy.
